Ladytron - Black Cat
Many artists and entertainers believe that music is an expression of the soul. It is a medium through which people can communicate with young and old alike. This has been the case for centuries past and will continue to be the case for many more years to come.
Through music, barriers can be broken, hope restored and dreams realised.
Recently, I was fortunate enough to meet up with Muslim singer Deeyah, who took time out from her current recording schedule to talk to me about the obstacles and uphill struggles she has faced over the last 11 years in the music business.
Never a character far from controversy, over the last decade she has been unfortunate enough to find her name dragged into the media spotlight for many of the wrong reasons. Chastised and often ostracised by a section of Muslim society she has always felt that her ability to express herself creatively has been hindered by a simple lack of understanding from those who criticise her.
Born in Norway to a Pakistani father and a mother of Afghan and Persian origin, from an early age, both Deeyah and her brother embraced the musical influences their father and their culture impressed upon them.
"I was seven years of age when my life really changed because of music. As a child growing up in Europe I got to see the Eurovision song contest every year and I was obsessed with the entries from across the continent and forever singing the songs that were performed. I had this knack of hearing a tune and lyrics and very quickly being able to remember them.
"One day I was singing in the garden when my voice happened to catch the attention of my father. He approached me and asked me to sing for him. I did so and thought nothing more of it, although I remember being very proud that he wanted to listen.
"Then, a few days later he presented me with my very own electronic keyboard and told me that from now on I should practice every day after I had completed my studies."
The young Deeyah's performance had left her father impressed enough to organise vocal coaching for his daughter and also piano lessons.
"Dad didn't want me just to be a singer. He thought it was important for me to understand music and be able to play and write my own material. As anyone in the business will tell you, great success can be achieved from composing as well as performing."
Six years later and barely into her teens, Deeyah celebrated her first album deal. By the time she was seventeen she had two albums under her belt and was recognised as a promising new talent by many people in Scandinavia and beyond. It looked like everything was going her way and a major new young star was in the making.
This was in sharp contrast to the profession she would probably have chosen herself had a career in music not opened up for her.
"From an academic perspective I always thought that I would end up in law although my father had continually impressed upon me the importance of going into a career where hard work can overcome political differences or cultural prejudices and allow you to be a success.
"Through him I came to believe that music and sport were the two areas where the colour of your skin or your choice of religion could never hold you back. It was unfortunate that I would one day find this to be proven wrong."
By the age of seventeen, Deeyah's career looked like it was ready to take a step up and reach a wider audience but at just about this time she got to experience the first negative reaction to her music and it was an episode set to be repeated on many occasions over the coming years.
"Suddenly, people within the community - people that my family and I shared common values and beliefs with - began to voice their dissent over my choice of career. My father started to hear disgruntled elders suggesting I should withdraw from singing since it was in some way anti-Islamic and that what I was doing was offensive to Muslims."
The level of criticism became so intense that eventually her parents were forced to move and Deeyah had to leave the country where she had grown up and where her career had begun, to pursue a new life in Britain.
"I had to say goodbye to my family and friends because the intolerance from other Muslims just became too difficult to handle. People told me that I could expect a much more balanced reaction in the UK and that the pressures and threats that were issued to me in Norway would never happen in London."
Deeyah came to the UK with the intention of lifting her career up to a new level and in the early days the signs were promising. However, it wasn't long before her act began to incite anger from British Muslims, even though she maintains that she never set out to target them or anyone with her music.
"True Islam is all about peace and respecting your fellow man. True Islam is about tolerance. I hold these principals close to my heart. However, there a minority of extremists who appear intent upon strangling the basic rights of ordinary people by reacting to anything they don't like with death threats and violence.
"Many of my shows here in England had to be called off and I was forced to hire bodyguards following a torrent of abuse from people who claimed my act was an affront to Islam.
It was due to these scenes that the media dubbed Deeyah the "Muslim Madonna" because her Western counterpart managed to stir up a similar level of controversy among Christians all over the globe.
"It's not a tagline I'm comfortable with nor do I appreciate. I respect Madonna
as an artist. In fact along with Michael Jackson and Prince, she had the most influence on my early career but I don't want my music branded with the stamp of another artist.
"What I find most interesting about Madonna is the fact that in the Western world, even if her act is considered offensive to Christians, she has never been exposed to the same level of violence and threatening behaviour that I have by extremist Muslims who claim to be acting in the name of Islam, the religion of peace."
The video for her single, What Will Be, which was released last year, outraged many fundamentalists in the Muslim world with its provocative scenes of her stripping off a burka to reveal her bikini-clad body underneath, but when I challenged her on this she was quick to defend the film.
"This song is all about the rights of Muslim women and female empowerment and I've not heard many people point out that we also featured Muslim women in the video who have fought for freedom of expression. I knew there would be opposition to what I was doing but never to the level that I experienced. Certain TV stations were forced to drop it from their schedules after receiving death threats and I think it's a tragic shame - as a Muslim myself - that in the 21st Century there are still certain elements of society who try to deny us freedom of speech and expression."
Over the course of the next few months, Deeyah began to see her public image come under greater and greater attack and was even discredited in the UK by the MCGB (Muslim Council of Great Britain), after approaching them for help.
"I was getting a lot of hate mail and a breakfast TV show in the UK offered me the chance to give my side of the story. However, a representative from the MCGB spent most of his time pre-interview trying to discourage me from saying anything negative and when we went on air, he did his very best to prevent me from speaking and discredited me continuously.
"The most telling comment for me was when someone from the elders in the community approached me and declared: "The reason we don't like you is because you are setting an example to our daughters which will make them think they can do what they like." Why shouldn't men and women - regardless of their religious beliefs - be able to express themselves freely?"
Articles started appearing which suggested Deeyah wasn't a Muslim at all and was in fact a Hindu looking for publicity after someone had discovered her birth name to be Deepika, a traditional Hindu name. I asked her about this and once again she was insistent that a combination of over-zealous Muslims and a biased press looking to fan the flames of controversy were really responsible for this story.
"My parents are both Muslim but they raised my brother and I to be tolerant of all religions. When she arrived in Norway my mother befriended a Hindu woman whom she became very close to. This woman asked her to name her first child, either Deepak if she had a boy or Deepika if she had a girl. My mother never forgot her kindness or her request and that was how I got my name. You don't have to have an Arabic or Persian name to be a Muslim."
This year, Deeyah was forced to leave the UK and she is now based in America, recording her latest album; music she says will explore the complexities of her culture because it is "time something was done to modernise people's way of thinking".
"All the music and lyrics are my own and I feel that my new material - dealing with my life, my religion and the politics of the world we live in - is some of the most personal I have created to date, although I am sure it is still likely to cause controversy in certain circles. If people want to find fault with you they inevitably will.
"What many people don't realise is that for every death threat and e-mail of condemnation I have received, there are literally dozens of correspondences from young people, applauding me for what I am trying to do. My music is a voice for the young and I want them to embrace the positive messages I am trying to express so that they can see that there is another way. I don't write to make barriers, I write to bring them down. My performances aren't about trying to offend; they're about trying to open up dialogue and build bridges.
"For me, the worst thing is that you can expect this level of hatred from racists but when you start receiving it from your own kind, it makes it almost impossible to bear. It is without question the greatest sense of disappoint I have ever felt."
But even through all the adversity when I asked Deeyah if she would do it all again, she had no hesitation with her response.
"Without question! I feel this in my blood. My music is who I am. I never set out to be an example: other people have made me one and I have had to deal with it. But I am not going away. No matter what the level of intimidation, I am here to stay. My voice will never be silenced by violence or aggression. That is a message I feel we all need to embrace, Hindu, Christian or Muslim. In time, change will come and it will be the young - as it always is - who will make it happen."
It's difficult to find fault with Deeyah's optimism and commitment to her cause. There is no doubt that she feels passionate about what she is doing, not just because she has a love of music, but also because she believes in equal rights for everyone.
Some might argue that she is a protagonist who is using the controversy and current religious tensions to further her own career but when you analyse the sacrifices she has been forced to make, justifying such an argument seems quite a stretch of the imagination.
I believe that she has demonstrated a great deal of courage in sticking to the principals she follows and if there is need for change in the world, then surely this kind of human spirit and resilience are exactly what is required to bring it into effect.

The Cure first formed in 1976 and would continue for a few decades afterwards. Much like Fleetwood Mac, The Cure would have a few changes in their lineup, with only one remaining through the entire life of the band. The member who was with the band from the start is Robert Smith, who is the guitarist and main songwriter for the group. The main music genres that The Cure focuses on are post punk, alternative rock, gothic rock and new wave. It is quite a variation that many have enjoyed from listening to The Cure in both the past, present, and more than likely, the future.
Despite the other music genres they play, they become one of the most popular alternative rock bands in the world during the 1990s and have sold millions of albums. In fact, a count done in 2004 calculates that The Cure has sold about 27 million albums since it first formed in 1976. Throughout the life of the band, they have been quick in releasing numerous albums. Looking at the fact that The Cure has released a total of 12 albums and 30 singles in the last two years would prove to just about anyone that they are constantly working on their music. When looking at the history of the band, one can see that they have gone through a number of phases where they focus more on one genre than any other, such as their gothic phase during the early 1980s and the alternative rock phase after 1990. It appears, however, that after their change to alternative rock, they have continued to focus more on that particular genre, quite possibly because it is the more popular genre today. While many still enjoy the other genres, alternative rock is appealing to more of the population than the other genres.
From the time the band was formed until 2008, The Cure had been successful in releasing a total of 13 studio albums that continue to sell, even though all none of the original band has remained, with the exception of Robert Smith. The other current members of the band include Simon Gallup, who has been with the band since 1979, though he took a break from the band in the early 1980s, Porl Thompson, who has been with the band since 1976, and Jason Cooper, who is the newest member after joining in 1995. Aside from the four current members, The Cure has seen eight other members come and go, such as Lol Tolhurst, Michael Dempsey, Perry Bamonte and Roger O'Donnell, to name a few. Each member had their own reasons for leaving the band, such as a loss of interest or the want to search for other interests outside of The Cure. The change in members does not appear to have slowed The Cure down much, if at all. Aside from the music they have put out over the decades, they have completed music videos and have won a few awards. They have been successful for the last thirty years and they will probably continue to be successful until the time comes when the band will dissolve.

Little Boots - Stuck on Repeat
The Gretsch Guitar has a long and wonderful history going back more than 100 years. The Gretsch story begins in 1883 when Friedrich Gretsch started up a small musical instrument shop in Brooklyn New York, where they made banjos, drums and tambourines. Unfortunately Frederich wouldn't get to see his company reach the peak of its success because he passed away only 12 years later at the young age of 39.
The company was taken over by his teenage son Fred who ended up building the company into one of America's top importers and manufacturers of musical instruments. So in 1916, a bigger facility was needed and Fred moved the operations to a huge ten-story building. While in this new building, the demand for guitars started to grow, so Gretsch started offering acoustic arch top guitars to target the Jazz musicians and acoustic flat tops for the Country musicians.
In 1935, a man by the name of Duke Kramer joined the Gretsch Company and remained a valued counsel up until his death at the age of 88. Charles "Duke" Kramer was known as "Mr. Guitar Man" and was a big reason why Gretsch guitars are where they are today. To show Duke how much he meant to the company, Gretsch named a guitar after him called "The Silver Duke" even though he couldn't play a note.
In 1942, Fred Gretsch Sr. retired and left his sons Fred Jr. and William, to run the company. Fred Jr. and William had been working in the company since 1927 so they were prepared for the promotion. Fred managed for a short while until he left to be a commander in the Navy and then William became president. Fred Jr. took over once again a few years later in 1948, when William passed away.
The 50's were great for Gretsch guitars mainly because of the popularity of Rock music. They were the first guitar company to introduce custom color finishes to their lineup and ended up being one of the top guitar makers in the decade. They even attracted popular guitar players to endorse their guitars such as Chet Atkins, Eddie Cochran and Duane Eddy.
Popularity and success continued for Gretsch in the early 60's when George Harrison, who was with The Beatles at the time, started using Gretsch guitars.
The end of the 60's on the other hand was not that great. Fred Gretsch Jr. decided to retire and sold the company to Baldwin Manufacturing. Baldwin didn't seem to understand Gretsch's position in the market and times were dreadful for the company for the rest of the 60's and 70's. Baldwin also moved the guitar production to Arkansas where the factory went through two terrible fires.
Baldwin decided to shut down production in the early 80's and eventually sold it back to the Gretsch family when Fred Gretsch III bought it in 1985. Fred then moved operations to Savannah, GA where he began the process of reviving the company.
Fred got Gretsch back on the right track when he released a series of vintage re-issues, new models and some classic Gretsch drums as well. These releases caused an immediate impact and Gretsch instruments were back in demand.
In 2002, a deal was made with Fender where Fender would take control of the manufacturing and distribution of Gretsch. This joining of forces enabled the Gretsch Company to continue to grow without sacrificing their ideals.
Being involved with Fender has made the popularity of the Gretsch guitar even bigger today. Some of the artists who endorse Gretsch guitars are Chet Atkins, Brian Setzer, Bo Diddley, Jimmie Vaughan, Malcolm Young and Stephen Stills.

Key signatures are a theoretical approach to knowing what scales, chords and ideas you can play during a song without worrying about playing wrong notes. You can use the chords in a song to figure out what key it is in or if you are using regular notation you can simply look at how many sharps and flats or flats there are at the beginning of the clef. Key signatures can be major or minor and be any of the 12 notes of music, such as A minor or C major. Key signatures can give a certain feelings or moods to a song as well, much like major and minor chords.
Circle of Fifths
An easy way to figure out what key your playing in is to use the circle of fifths chart. At the beginning of a sheet of notation music there are a group of sharps or flats. The lines these symbols are on affects the notes on that line for the duration of the song or until the key changes again. To use the circle of fifths chart you can just count how many sharps or flats there are on the staff and compare it to the chart. If your music has 1 sharp, it is F major. Make sure if there are sharps, you use the right side of the chart, since the left side is for flats. If there are 3 flats, the key is Eb major. The numbers inside the circle correspond to the number of sharps (right side numbers) and the number of flats (left side numbers). There are a lot of different style of the circle of fifths charts so make sure you know what chart your looking at and know what everything means.
Keys and Chords
You can also tell what key you're in by studying the chords you're playing. When you're playing just power chords using the root, 5th and 8th notes, you can judge by the root notes of the chords what key you're in. For example, using the chords C5, D5, G5 you could be in the key of Gmaj OR Cmaj since both keys contain the notes C, D, and G. To really narrow down the key you're in, you have to use chords that contain more notes. If you add in the 3rd to each chord it only leaves the key of Gmaj because the third of Dmaj is an F#, which doesn't exist in the key of Cmaj. This shows why keys are important. If you're playing these three chords, C, D, and G, you could maybe get away with playing a Cmaj scale for the melody by leaving out some notes, but it would be more to your advantage to use all the notes of the Gmaj scale.
Busy P - To Protect and Entertain (feat. Murs)
One easy way to customize your guitar's look and possibly even the sound is to put on some new volume and tone knobs. This is one of the quickest customizations you can do becuase control knobs are largely available in many different materials and styles.
I personally like taking out the stock knobs for some wooden ones. They create an organic and high end look that also may improve the sound since it will be vibrating through wood instead of metal or plastic.
Along with just about any kind of wood, you can obtain them in silver or gold painted metal or various plastic forms. They can come in numerous different shapes and sizes so there should be a good match for whatever type of guitar you have. The wooden volume and tone knobs generally cost more but its worth it for the quality. An idea that usually works well is to get knobs made out of the same wood as the fretboard.
The best part about customizing your guitar's control knobs is that most of the time you will be able to pull the stock ones off yourself. Just pull straight up on them and they should slowly slide off, but if it seems like they are not going anywhere you may have to take them to a guitar person to get them removed. Sometimes they are just stuck on there really well and you don't want to damage your electronics by ripping one off. Volume and Tone knob customization is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to significantly improve your electric guitar.

The Life and Legacy of John Denver
When I hear the name John Denver, I always think of Colorado. John Denver is a talented American singer, musician, and song maker. John Denver is famous all over the world. His music is known to have been inspired by his home state and the beautiful Rocky Mountain landscape. When Denver was born, he was named Henry John Deutscendorf. The singer/songwriter began his career as a folk rock singer in the early 60s.
Soon after that, Denver joined The Mitchell Trio and become their vocalist. He managed to become a real celebrity when Peter, Paul, and Mary recorded his song Leaving On A Jet Plane. This song was their first and only Number One single ever.
John Denver stayed with the Mitchell Trio as their vocalist for four years. After the members of the group are separated, John Denver realized that he had got to the top of the Pop charts and he is one of the best selling artists. Rocky Mountain High, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Sunshine On My Shoulders, Thank God Im A Country Boy, Back Home Again, and Annies Song are just some of his most popular songs.
Denver had not only been a talented musician but also an environmental and humanitarian activist. In his lyrics, John Denver used to support people to get closer to the earth and nature. The artist freely expressed his views in his songs in a peaceful but compassionate manner. His lyrics were inspired by the beauties he had seen living in the Rocky Mountains near Aspen, Colorado.
John Denver had enjoyed watching the snow, the sunshine, the beauty of all of nature. If John Denver had never seen the beauties of the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, probably he would have never written his songs.
John Denver had often worked together with Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. Denver even recorded many songs with the cast of the Muppets. He even played a role in a movie the film was Oh God! with George Burns. During the twentieth century, John Denver has continued to be one of the most famous singers.
John Denver passed away suddenly and tragically while he was piloting for the first time his new plane. The aircraft was caused by low fuel.
All his life had been spent close to nature. John Denver had devoted himself to his work, spending all his time singing and songwriting. John Denver had contributed a lot to many environmental and humanitarian organizations. John Denver will last in the hearts of his fans forever although he is not yet among us. Music and the Brain
It can be easily observed that music has an effect on the senses. Music effects the body and the brain in various ways.
There has been some scientific research in recent times to find out the relationship between music and intelligence. Even though it seems fairly obvious that music has an effect on the brain cells themselves and that listening some forms of music, especially western and Indian classical can increase intelligence, science, as always has been trying to seek a proof of this phenomenon.
Researchers believe that certain types of musical actually creates new neural pathways in the brain. That means that the brain can function in a different filed than that of memory alone. After listening to classical music, adults can do certain spatial tasks more quickly, such as putting together a jigsaw puzzle.
Why does this happen?
The classical music pathways in our brain are similar to the pathways we use for spatial reasoning. When we listen to classical music, the spatial pathways are turned on and ready to be used.
University of California, Irvine, 36 people took standardized intelligence tests after three 10 minute periods of Mozart. Those who listened to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos (K448) scored an average 119 - eight points higher than those who listened to a relaxation tape and nine points higher than those who listened to silence. Mozart's music is quite complex and very patterned said neurobiologist Frances H Rauscher, the study's lead author. Rauscher said the complex music may "prime" the brain for mathematics or other analytical work because it triggers the same brain activity. "We predict that music lacking complexity or which is repetitive may interfere with rather than enhance abstract reasoning," the researchers said in the journal Nature. (UPI, Deseret News Oct 14 1993 Entire study documented in Nature Vol. 365 14 October 1993.)
The music most people call classical - works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, or Mozart - is different from other kinds of music as it has a more complex musical structure. Researchers think the complexity of classical music is what primes the brain to solve spatial problems more quickly. So listening to classical music may have different effects on the brain than listening to other types of music.
One might recall how classical music appears to be tedious, boring or may also give one a headache. I have especially noticed how people just cant stand listening to Bach - it just gets too much to take for them.
Why does this happen?
First reason might be because one is not used to listening to it; therefore, there is no identification with it as such.
Secondly, this might be because the mind needs to be very attentive and swift to follow music - the sounds, the notes, the complexity of the musical architecture - and when one is listening without paying attention there is bound to be a conflict, resistance of some kind.
Thirdly, probably because one is accustomed to treat music as something separate, outside of oneself.
According to Steven Gillman, a brain researcher, listening to and participating in music creates new neural pathways in the brain that stimulate creativity. Studies have shown that music actually trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. Music stimulates the mind, encourages creativity and helps to lay a foundation for learning that leads to higher intelligence and aptitude.
GJ Whitrow quoted Einstein: 'He often told me that one of the most important things in his life was music. Whenever he felt that he had come to the end of the road or into a difficult situation in his work he would take refuge in music and that would usually resolve all his difficulties.' Einstein is also thought to have said about his theory of relativity: 'It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the rest of musical perception.'"
In recent years much discussion has surrounded the role of music in child development.
According to Plato: "...music is a more potent instrument than any other for education..." now scientists know why. Music , they believe, trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. After eight months of musical training, 3 year olds were expert puzzle masters, scoring 80% higher than their playmates did in spatial intelligence-the ability to visualize the world accurately. This skill later translates into mathematical/conceptual and engineering skills.
Preschoolers who studied piano performed 34% better in spatial and temporal reasoning ability than preschoolers who spent the same amount of time learning to use computers. (Rauscher & Shaw. As reported in Neurological Research, February 1997)
The very best engineers and technical designers in the Silicon Valley industry are, nearly without exception, practicing musicians. (Grant Venerable, The Center for the Arts in the Basic Curricum, New York, 1989) For the unborn child, classical music, played at a rhythm of 60 beats per minute, equivalent to that of a resting human heart, provides an environment conducive to creative and intellectual development. (Dr.Thomas Veert, The Secret Life of the Unborn Child)
